Assured model label
Let your customers and employees know that your footprinting calculator can provide immediate, bespoke carbon footprint estimations they can trust. The Carbon Trust label confirms that the methodology behind your carbon calculations has been tested and complies with international footprinting standards.
What is the assured model label?
Customers, investors and regulators are demanding more carbon transparency. At the same time, supply chain decarbonisation has come into focus as B2B customers want to understand the carbon impact of the products and services they buy. In response, carbon calculators and online carbon footprinting tools have emerged, offering bespoke carbon footprints for products and organisations.
Our assured model label confirms that the calculation methodology behind a carbon footprint has undergone an in-depth third-party review process. It confirms that the calculation model complies with international footprinting standards, adding an extra layer of credibility.
Who is the assured model label for?
From supporting internal carbon accounting to external publication, an assured carbon footprint model has a myriad of use cases. You may benefit from this type of assurance if you want to:
- Show you used a calculation method that was assured by a third party to calculate your product or organisational carbon footprint, giving weight and impartiality to the figure.
- Provide customers with reliable information on the carbon impact of the products and services they purchase to support their Scope 3 footprinting.
- Incentivise customers to compare the carbon cost of different products and their quantities to support more sustainable procurement decisions.
- Sell footprinting software and build trust in the methodology behind the software.
- Allow your customers and employees to update carbon footprints as they obtain more accurate data.
- Streamline carbon footprint verification for footprints calculated using an assured model.
Companies can get their model assured by an independent third party.
Does an assured model label mean footprint results are verified?
In the majority of cases, model outputs do not constitute a verified product or organisational carbon footprint. The assured model label only confirms that the online tool can generate carbon footprints that conform to international standards, such as the Greenhous Gas Protocol, PAS 2050 and ISO 14067. It does not guarantee that the data inputs used to calculate carbon footprints meet the necessary requirements.
In certain cases, it is possible to assure an ‘auto-verified’ model, which generates outputs that are verified. This requires a bespoke approach to building the tool.
For verified carbon footprints and their detailed claims, look for the Carbon Trust’s product carbon footprint label or organisational carbon footprint label.
Where can the label feature?
The Carbon Trust label can be used to show that your calculator has been assured by an independent third party. It can be showcased on your website, model software, annual or sustainability reports, sales decks and stakeholder presentations.
We require that companies carrying the assured model label also host clear additional information on the tool’s footprinting boundaries and calculation methods on their own websites. This will ensure the highest degree of transparency.
