Greenprint

A resilient, reliable decarbonised power system is essential for countries to ensure a secure and prosperous economy and to reach their nationally determined contribution (NDC) targets. To achieve this requires a comprehensive, systems led approach at a local level, bringing together renewable energy deployment, coal transition, grid expansion and operation. While the challenges and opportunities may be different by country, there will be similarities which we believe can create a blueprint to accelerate the transition to clean, resilient and affordable energy systems at speed and scale across the globe.

Introducing Greenprint

We are excited to be launching Greenprint — an innovative approach to designing and planning an energy transition blueprint, drawing from over 20 years’ experience at the forefront of decarbonisation.

Greenprint is a holistic, systems-level approach designed to address all aspects of the energy system and to deliver a realistic pathway to transition, setting out solutions that support greater economic success and achieve buy-in from local governments, business and communities.

Our approach

Decarbonising the power sector requires a whole systems approach focused on three interconnected and interdependent core elements — coal transition, renewable energy and grid expansion.

Our approach with Greenprint is to ensure:

  • Maximum efficiency, resource optimisation, and cost reductions by aligning all component parts to operate as one energy system
  • Promotion of community ownership and participation through a stakeholder-led approach, so improving energy access and economic prosperity at the local level
  • Increased investor confidence and economic stability, bringing lower bills for customers
  • Greater system flexibility, and therefore resilience and reliability for maximum energy security

How we can help

Our global energy transition experts will work with target countries and regions, alongside governments, partners, and funders to:

  1. Set out a view of the combined solutions required for a secure, reliable, resilient, and affordable decarbonised energy system by 2050.
  2. Make the socio-economic case for the transition, including employment, investment, and energy cost reduction, as well as the potential for economic growth.
  3. Map the enabling factors required across policy design, regulation, and system operation.
  4. Define the opportunity presented by the transition, alongside the cost of inaction.
  5. Set out a clear implementation plan ensuring that strategic goals are translated into actionable steps.

Through this collaborative process, we aim to address the following key questions:

Technical/technological

  1. What are the best options to deliver a secure and affordable power system?
  2. How can countries best utilise flexibility to reduce costs and maximise efficiency of the future system?
  3. How much needs (renewables, grid etc.) to be built out and by when?

Policy/regulatory

  1. What policies and regulations are required to support new modes of system operation and to support workers and communities currently sustained by fossil fuel industries in that new system?
  2. What are the best ways to incentivise the build out of renewables and the grid?
  3. What could governments do to maximise opportunities in their power sectors?

Socio-economic

  1. Which jobs would be at risk and what jobs could be created by this transition?
  2. What are the broader social and economic costs and benefits, including health impacts?
  3. What investment is required to achieve the pace of change required?

Next steps

To deliver on this ambitious and transformative programme we are seeking:

  • Governments who would like to come on the journey with us, ready to address the challenges they face in the energy transition.
  • Funders who can help us to deliver the impact we believe can be achieved with this programme.
  • Partners who can bring their expertise and local market understanding to work alongside us to deliver this approach in regions across the world.
