The Carbon Trust x CATA x Project Syndicate

On 14 November at COP29 the Carbon Trust, in partnership with CATA and Project Syndicate, hosted a live-streamed panel on ‘Accelerating the transition to a decarbonised future’ exploring how a successful transition away from coal can help the world achieve its climate goals. Our Director of Asia and Africa, Chris Stephens was joined by Ramesh Subramaniam from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Woochong Um from The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), Senator Sherry Rehman, the Chair of Pakistan's Climate Change Committee, and International journalist Rosanna Lockwood who moderated the session.

COP29’s focus on finance presented an opportunity to explore how the necessary capital can be mobilised to reduce emissions from coal, which remains the single largest source of global greenhouse gas emissions. The panel explored the following topics:

  • What must happen to mobilise the scale of finance needed to accelerate the coal-to-clean transition while addressing the related socioeconomic issues?
  • How can COP29 catalyse the necessary coalitions to demonstrate progress and to keep everyone's eye on the prize?

Thanks to Hi-Impact and Project Syndicate, official media partners of this year’s COP. If you were unable to tune in live, you can watch the recording here.
