Overview

Decarbonising the Use-Phase of Connected Devices (DUCD) is a collaboration between Amazon, Microsoft, Samsung, and Sky with the Carbon Trust formed to tackle the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from use-phase electricity consumption of internet connected electrical and electronic products. Published In November 2024, the methodology sets out how companies can assess and report emissions using data drawn from devices that are being used by their customers, enhancing the accuracy of reporting that has until now relied upon lifetime forecasts used in current emissions accounting. Tech firms will also be able to account for emissions reductions that have been achieved in the process of using the methodology.

Products that are connected to the internet have the ability to communicate information regarding their activity during their lifetime which enables calculation of their use-phase electricity consumption and resulting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions based on data collected from devices in use. This can lead to considerable improvements in the accuracy of use-phase GHG emissions calculations over current estimation methods and enables annual GHG emissions reporting from products in use throughout their lifetime.

Assessment of Product Use-phase GHG Emissions from Electrical and Electronic Products - Part 1: Specification and Guidance provides requirements and guidance for organisations to calculate the GHG emissions resulting from the use of sold or leased electrical and electronic products through the use of data collected from devices in use by customers.

Assessment of Product Use-phase GHG Emissions from Electrical and Electronic Products - Part 2: Conformity Assessment provides requirements for the assessment of conformity of products to Part 1: Specification and Guidance where organisations have applied Part 1 to calculate the GHG emissions resulting from the use of sold or leased consumer electronics products and, where applicable, demonstrate energy reductions of the product.
