Climate change is emerging as a major challenge for modern society. Government, business, and wider society will all be affected and all have a role to play in tackling it.
This report summarises the nature of the problem. It explains the fundamental science and the accumulating evidence that climate change is real and needs to be addressed. It also explains the future potential impacts, including the outstanding uncertainties.
This report was based on the most authoritative information available at time of publication in 2005. Its messages are still correct. Since then, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has published its fifth assessment of relevant scientific, technical and economic analysis and concluded that the evidence for human-induced climate change has become stronger.
