Overview

The Cable Protection System (CPS) IV project aimed to address the challenges and gaps in existing standards, particularly at the interface between cables and windfarm foundations. By consolidating industry knowledge and establishing consistent requirements, the project sought to enhance the reliability and effectiveness of CPS.

The project focused on consolidating industry knowledge and establishing a standardised set of requirements for CPS design, including:

  • Holistic design approach: It emphasises the importance of considering the CPS, cables, and foundations as an integrated system rather than isolated components.
  • Interface design: The report provides recommendations for the design of the mechanical latch/connector and other CPS components to ensure secure and reliable connections.
  • Dynamic forces: It highlights the effects of hydrodynamic and geophysical forces on CPS and their implications for cable protection and longevity.
  • Additional protection measures: The guidance outlines best practices for using additional protection measures such as burial, rock placement, and concrete mattresses to enhance CPS effectiveness.
  • Standardised framework: It establishes a consistent framework for CPS design, analysis, and qualification, promoting best practices across the industry.

The standardised framework offered by the CPS IV project is intended to be a valuable resource for all stakeholders involved in the development and operation of offshore wind farms.

This report is published under the Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA) cables technical working group and was delivered by Wood.
