The Carbon Trust announced today that it is establishing an office and team in Mexico to further build the Carbon Trust’s presence around the world. The organisation currently has offices in the UK, China, the US and South Africa.
The Carbon Trust will initially work with the Mexican Federal and State Governments, and the private sector to support Mexico’s pathway to a low carbon, sustainable economy. Three projects will shortly commence covering energy efficiency for business, labelling of goods and services and help for Mexican states to cut carbon emissions.
Earlier this year Nick Clegg, the UK’s Deputy Prime Minister, in his visit to Mexico, announced the Carbon Trust will be supporting the Mexican Government to put into operation an ambitious energy efficiency advice and finance programme for some 150,000 Mexican small and medium sized businesses.
As well as saving $1 billion in reduced energy costs, the Carbon Trust-designed programme will contribute to economic development by increasing competitiveness while cutting carbon emissions by over 6 million tonnes. The Carbon Trust will be working with SENER, the Mexican Energy Ministry, and NAFIN, Mexico’s National Development Bank, to establish this world leading project over the coming year.
Through its Low Carbon States Mexico programme the Carbon Trust will also assist a number of states in cutting carbon and costs through the provision of a dedicated methodology and one to one technical and strategic support. Two states will be used as pilots and form the basis for wider roll out.
The Carbon Trust is also developing an environmental labelling scheme for products and services in Mexico. The scheme is being designed to promote sustainable purchasing and procurement for consumers, companies and the public sector.
The objective of this project is to drive the international competitiveness and economic efficiency of Mexican industry through more sustainable production. It will also provide a commonly recognised set of criteria to ensure that environmental claims about products and services are properly substantiated.
To deliver the labelling scheme the Carbon Trust is working with SEMARNAT, the Mexican government’s secretariat of the environment and natural resources, as well as representatives from small, medium and large Mexican businesses, NGOs and the public sector.
The Carbon Trust has also appointed Fernando Oléa to lead the organisation’s work in Mexico. Based in Mexico City Fernando will lead commercial operations in Mexico. Fernando has joined the Carbon Trust from Mexico’sNational Institute of Ecology and Climate Change – INECC – where he was Chief Advisor to the Director General.
By opening an office in Mexico and building a new team, we can further our mission to accelerate a move to a sustainable, low carbon economy. We are committed to ensuring our hard earned knowledge and expertise gained over the past thirteen years is put to best use all around the world.
