Empowering more informed choices with Amazon

At the Carbon Trust, we are proud to be part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly programme, a commitment to helping customers shop for products with sustainability features.

What is the Climate Pledge Friendly programme?

Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly (CPF) programme is a sustainable shopping program, which helps its customers navigate and shop for products that have sustainability features.

Amazon partners with third-party certifications and verifications, such as the Carbon Trust, that help highlight products that meet certain sustainability standards. Once certified or verified against these standards, and provided they meet any additional requirements as defined by Amazon, the product qualifies for Amazon’s CPF programme.

This programme forms one aspect of Amazon’s wider ‘Climate Pledge’.

On inception the CPF programme was available only in France, Italy, Spain, the UK and Germany. This has now been extended to cover the US, Australia and Mexico, with Amazon planning to extend eligibility further, increasing the impact the scheme has on consumer behaviour and choices.

How does it work?

The Carbon Trust label features as an external verification on the Climate Pledge Friendly programme, helping customers to better understand the carbon impact and reductions of the products they buy.

As a starting point, you would need to have at least calculated the full lifecycle footprint of your selected product against an international standard e.g. ISO 14067. To feature on CPF you must get that carbon footprint verified by the Carbon Trust to demonstrate that its emissions are reducing. Upon successful verification (this process takes 8-12 weeks on average), the Carbon Trust will share your ASINs for the products we have verified with Amazon, who will confirm eligibility.

Our eligible label

More than 1900 products with the Carbon Trust label are featured on Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly. Our carbon emissions reductions achieved claim is approved to be listed on the CPF programme.

Carbon emissions reductions achieved

This claim shows that the product’s carbon footprint is reducing year-on-year, and that the company has committed to achieving ongoing footprint reductions with validated reduction plans.

Wherever the label appears on a consumer facing product, this represents a cradle-to-grave footprint.

For more information please see Product carbon footprints Requirements for assurance – Part 2: Claims and labelling, clause 3.2.

Verified reduced footprint label

Please note that there are products with our carbon neutral label on Amazon’s climate pledge friendly programme but the Carbon Trust no longer offers new carbon neutral verifications. This move allows our clients to communicate with confidence in the face of an evolving regulatory landscape. We are working with existing label holders to transition to our new range of label offers.
